California Bans Online Impersonation

Hey Guys

Came across this article tonight. Thought it was a pretty good example of a government legislating for the 21st century and being proactive about an issue facing online communities and internet users.

Hope we are all having a great study break,
Luke

  1. Everytime I see that Arnold Schwarzenegger signs a bill or something useful I get a little thrill at the idea of his bulky arms doing good in paper ways. lol.

I also like that while many people approve of this law there was still the element that were disapproving, for fear that political satire and their freedom of speech would be quashed under the new legislation. Am I naive? When I was reading it I thought the whole point of this law was to prevent identity theft and malicious use of anothers identity for the purpose of fraud or harm? I don't see how satire or parody even comes close to trespassing on these waters.

The ideas that this law encompasses comes a step closer to bringing state laws up to date with online practices and problems. I approve and am curious to see to what use this law ends up being used, and how effective it is in dealing with the problems that it was made to target.

On a side note my study break could have used a bit more study, thanks for asking :)

Hope your break was great too,
    Sam.

  2. Ahahah Sam I think that is the nature of study break in a nutshell. Everyone I have spoken to today have lamented the fact that they could have/should have done a bit more study lol. I do love that Arnie is seemingly so proactive about governing and truly seems to be a surprisingly smart politician ( or at least he has smart aids). I think the main fear with such a law would be that it could potentially be amended to encompass things like satire etc, but I certainly think it si a step in the right direction :)
